Truthfully, i think a majority didn't belief the world would end in 2012 but they probably had it at the back of their minds.
However, there have been more than two hundred false predictions of the end of the world. The last being on December, 21, 2012. This date was believed to be the day the world will end because it marked the end of the 5000 years count for the Mayans. Although, the rumor about the end of the world being connected to this date has already been debunked by some Mayan historians, you wonder why there was such a fuzz in the first place.
I was shocked to learn that NASA was contacted by about 10 people every day asking about the end of the world, with some asking if they should kill themselves.
It is hilarious to think that human beings who didn't create the earth will be predicting when it will end.
What the bible has to say about this
In Matt 24:3, Jesus disciples asked him what the signs will be of his second coming and of the end of the world.
In Matt 24: 4-13, Jesus further explains that there will be troubles on the earth due to wars, persecution of the church, famines, earthquakes in many places, false prophets, etc. but the end will not come yet
In Matt 24: 14, Jesus finally gives us a clue by telling us that when the gospel is preached in all the world, then will the end come.
However, he further reveals in Matt 24:36 that no one will know the day of his coming except the almighty God.
A few things for you to think about
Firstly, John 15:19 tells us that we are not of this world , so start getting used to the fact that one day no matter how long it takes, the world will come to an end.
Many times when we hear such news, we begin to panic like we can really do anything about it. Its like going to the cinema to watch a movie in 3D. No matter how interesting, tragic, romantic or real it is, the movie still have to end and you will have to go home.
As a matter of fact, the world comes to an end for 151,600 people who die each day. As a Christian, you are to watch and pray Matt 24:42-45, so that you will be prepared and not caught unawares.
Always view life as a school, in which you are preparing for an impromptu test.
